Midwest Photography workshops is proud to offer a variety of unique photo safari trips in our 300 course series. These photographic excursions are designed for photographers of all skill levels, novice through advanced. Our instructors will take you to beautiful locations and provide you with world class instruction. Come with us to explore the United States, Europe and Canada; see natural beauty that will take your breath away. These trips are very well suited to Artists and Painters looking to work from photographs they have taken.
Our goal is to put the world in front of your lens and give you photographic opportunities of a lifetime.

April 2017
  • Wild Spring Flowers & Waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains

  • The Great Smoky Mountain National Park stretches from Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina. Clear invigorating air, sparkling streams and virgin woodlands provide an unsurpassed background complete with waterfalls and wildflowers. Photograph the Roaring Fork Stream cascading past giant moss covered boulders. Stroll through and shoot Cades Cove, an historic village preserved from a bygone era. The Smoky Mountains are an unspoiled, beautiful area any time of year, but Appalachia becomes a special place when the spring wildflowers and the Dogwood bloom.


June 2017
  • Digital Travel and Landscape Photography in Tuscany, Italy

  • Bring your digital camera and laptop computer to scenic Tuscany. This is Wine County! Spend 7 days and 7 nights in a historic 13th century monastery. Enjoy gourmet food! Photograph vineyards, classic architecture, the flora and fauna of Italy. Learn about how to develop your personal style and connect with the landscape. This workshop is appropriate for digital, film shooters or painters who will return home and later paint from their photos. The first three days involve at least six hours of shooting and three hours of classroom. The last four days, is primarily field shooting. You will learn about batch file processing raw files, workflow management, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and other techniques including HDR, panorama stitching, and many other digital techniques, such as focus stacking for the ultimate macro photos of flowers. A basic understanding of shutter speeds and f/stops is presumed. Bring your portfolio and your laptop. This workshop will be conducted in English. Chao! Meals, lodging and ground transportation are all included except airfare to and from Florence, Italy (all inclusive except lunches and souvenirs). Advanced registration is required.


October 2017
  • Fall Color in Maine

  • When you think of Maine, think of Lobsters, Moose, Lighthouses and Fall Color.  This 6-day workshop will divide time among Baxter State Park, Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Portland and Jonesport, Maine.  Photograph Lighthouses, spectacular harbors, and we will put you in close proximity to MOOSE! 35mm, digital and medium format cameras are welcome.


February 2018
  • Birds, Alligators, & Wildlife in Coastal Florida

  • This five-day workshop will put you in close proximity to wild alligators and wading birds that you can photograph with a 200-300mm lens - but don’t worry; you will be safely on a boardwalk.  On Monday evening, a slide lecture/program will be presented on technique.  For the balance of the week, we will be in the field photographing wildlife!  The first day is at the Merrit Island National Wildlife Refuge near Cape Canaveral.  The second and third day are at the Everglades National Park Anhinga Trail.  The fourth day is at The Venice Rookery.  The final Day is at Ding-Darling NWP.  You will learn about Fresnel lenses to create a telephoto fill flash.  If you have more powerful telephoto lenses or 2X converters, bring them.  35mm, digital and medium format cameras are welcome.  This is tripod shooting!  This workshop is appropriate for photographers and painters who will paint from their photos at home.  Airfare, lodging, and ground transportation are not included.  Contact MPW for help in renting large lenses.
     
    Students attending the 300 Series Safaris will qualify for a one-day Photoshop opportunity to print exhibition quality images from their recent safari, under the tutelage of an MPW instructor.  This printing day is included at no additional charge.

August 2018
  • Desert Light Arizona and Utah

  • The American West offers exotic vistas and terrain including canyons, mountains and rock formations. Photograph unspoiled views of some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere.  Put your lens in front of the dynamic swirls curves and texture of rock formations eroded from eons of wind and water.  Shoot ancient Native American rock drawings (petroglyphs).  This is the high plains desert at its best!  The Navaho Indians use the word horozo, to “walk in beauty”.  You will see and walk in some of the most spectacular beauty this corner of the world has to offer.  We will not only “walk in beauty”, we will fly in beauty.  Your trip includes a sunrise hot air balloon ride over picturesque Sedona, AZ.  Our two-state excursion is based in Page, Arizona, about six hours south of Las Vegas, Nevada and about three hours north of the Grand Canyon.  Ride a Jeep through Monument Valley, stroll both upper and lower Antelope Canyons.  Visit ancient Indian ruins and an extinct volcano, both on the edge of the Painted Desert, just east of Flagstaff.  Photograph giant Saguaro Cactus at Organ Pipe National Cactus Monument south of Tucson and sunset at Cathedral Rock in Sedona.  All camera formats are welcome.  Our instructor(s) are well versed in digital, medium and large formats cameras.  Learn the principles of composition used by landscape photographers.  Bring your portfolio for an evening group critique.

    We anticipate most students to fly in to Phoenix, AZ. on Good Friday.  Students should make their own arrangements to arrive in Organ Pipe National Park in Arizona and be ready for class on Saturday 9:00am local time.  This workshop is appropriate for photographers and painters who will paint from their photos at home.  Airfare, lodging and ground transportation is not included.  Lodging suggestions will be provided upon registration.
     
    Students attending the 300 Series Safaris will qualify for a one-day Photoshop opportunity to print exhibition quality images from their recent safari, under the tutelage of an MPW instructor.  This printing day is included at no additional charge.


October 2018
  • Waterfalls and Lighthouses UP Michigan Fall Color

  • This photo safari will provide a wonderful photography expierience shooting waterfalls and lighthouses in Michigan's scenic Upper Penninsula. We will traverse from Newberry to Ontenogan and all the great spots in between. Learn landscape composition techniques and long exposure techniques to add blur moving water. Photograph majestic lighthouses with tilt/shift lenses to minimize distortion. The Pictured Rocks National Seashore (Munising) are spectacular at any time of year, but truly exceptional during the fall color season. Join us for a real portfolio builder and educational week.
