Upcoming Photo Safari Trips

February 2018
  • Birds, Alligators, & Wildlife in Coastal Florida

  • This five-day workshop will put you in close proximity to wild alligators and wading birds that you can photograph with a 200-300mm lens - but don’t worry; you will be safely on a boardwalk.  On Monday evening, a slide lecture/program will be presented on technique.  For the balance of the week, we will be in the field photographing wildlife!  The first day is at the Merrit Island National Wildlife Refuge near Cape Canaveral.  The second and third day are at the Everglades National Park Anhinga Trail.  The fourth day is at The Venice Rookery.  The final Day is at Ding-Darling NWP.  You will learn about Fresnel lenses to create a telephoto fill flash.  If you have more powerful telephoto lenses or 2X converters, bring them.  35mm, digital and medium format cameras are welcome.  This is tripod shooting!  This workshop is appropriate for photographers and painters who will paint from their photos at home.  Airfare, lodging, and ground transportation are not included.  Contact MPW for help in renting large lenses.

Students attending the 300 Series Safaris will qualify for a one-day Photoshop opportunity to print exhibition quality images from their recent safari, under the tutelage of an MPW instructor.  This printing day is included at no additional charge.

Weather permitting, we will photograph at the Dark Skies park the Milky Way after dark.  Expect to photograph sunrise images of the Mackinaw bridge from the beach. We will travel to Tahquamenon Falls and Point Iroquois Lighthouse on Saturday. Sunday is spent at Fort Michilimackinac. We will provide instruction on landscape Composition techniques, the use of tilt/shift lenses (Nikon and Canon T/S lenses provided). Learn how to expose waterfalls to blur the water for a more realistic portrayal and making long exposures for not only photographing the starts, but night shots of the Mackinac Bridge as well. We will also spend time making environmental portraits at the local sawmill. Class size is limited to 10 students to insure an excellent student to instructor ratio.

August 2018
  • Desert Light Arizona and Utah

  • The American West offers exotic vistas and terrain including canyons, mountains and rock formations. Photograph unspoiled views of some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere.  Put your lens in front of the dynamic swirls curves and texture of rock formations eroded from eons of wind and water.  Shoot ancient Native American rock drawings (petroglyphs).  This is the high plains desert at its best!  The Navaho Indians use the word horozo, to “walk in beauty”.  You will see and walk in some of the most spectacular beauty this corner of the world has to offer.  We will not only “walk in beauty”, we will fly in beauty.  Your trip includes photographing picturesque Red Rock Canyon in Sedona, AZ.  Our two-state excursion is based in Page, Arizona, about six hours south of Las Vegas, Nevada and about three hours north of the Grand Canyon.  Ride a Jeep through Monument Valley, stroll both upper and lower Antelope Canyons.  Visit ancient Indian ruins and an extinct volcano, both on the edge of the Painted Desert, just east of Flagstaff.  Photograph giant Saguaro Cactus at Organ Pipe National Cactus Monument south of Tucson and sunset at Cathedral Rock in Sedona.  All camera formats are welcome.  Our instructor(s) are well versed in digital, medium and large formats cameras.  Learn the principles of composition used by landscape photographers.  Bring your portfolio for an evening group critique.

We anticipate most students to fly in to Phoenix, AZ. on Friday  Students should make their own arrangements to arrive in Organ Pipe National Park in Arizona and be ready for class on Saturday 9:00am local time.  This workshop is appropriate for photographers and painters who will paint from their photos at home.  Airfare, lodging and ground transportation is not included.  Lodging suggestions will be provided upon registration.

  • Fall Color in Vermont

  • This five-day workshop will provide excellent shooting opportunities viewing some of the most spectacular scenery in the northeast.  The high altitude of the mountains and the low altitude provide a full week of finding and shooting fall color.  Vermont is delightfully rural.  There are a plethora of covered bridges, waterfalls, classic New England churches and cemeteries.  Leaves changing color with mountains, barns, from both higher and lower vantage points make for spectacular photos.  Join us and see for yourself!  This workshop is appropriate for photographers and painters who will paint from their photos at home.
