#620 Ten Barns in a Day Saturday October 25, 2025 10AM – 5:00 PM
October 25, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
$100.00Join us for an all-day photography field trip visiting some of the best photo scenic barns in Southeast Michigan. We will put you in front of about 8–10 photo-scenic and historic barns all in one day. The barns are located within a 20 mile radius of Manchester Michigan about 20 miles west of Ann Arbor. Your instructor Richard Grubola will guide you to their locations and suggest the best opportunities of how to photograph them.
This Photo Scenic Barn Shoot is planned to efficiently expose you to these barns at the right time of day to help you get the optimum in shots and the maximum in shooting. There is no hiking and very little walking. Most shooting will be done close to your car. Sturdy shoes are recommended though.
Recommended camera equipment includes a zoom lens in the 24mm to 120mm range. A polarizer is also very strongly recommended as 80% of the barns at the time we will be visiting the are situated for a polarizing filter. Travel light. Tripods are fine but optional, because much of the shooting is done in bright light. If you are hand holding your camera, there are often fences and posts to rest on to obtain the aperture desired.
A full color map of the barns and our route will be handed out when we meet in Chelsea, Michigan at the McDonalds at 9:45 am Saturday morning. To get there, take Exit 159 off of I-94 about 20 miles west of Ann Arbor. When you get off this screwy exit you have to turn left to drive north on M-52 (S. Main St), Chelsea. About a quarter mile up the road is McDonald's on the right, 1535 S. Main St. will Richard Grubola be there wearing a photo vest.
There, we will have an orientation, receive the map, and discuss information needed for the day. Please endeavor to leave there by 9:45am. The first location is towards Manchester 2.5 miles south from there. When we shoot, I advise using Auto ISO or raising your ISO till you get the shutter speed and depth of field you want. A GPS will also be useful as we will have addresses to navigate by.
We will be moving from location to location in a caravan. Richard will be there helping everyone with photographic and compositional issues. We will shoot till about noon then we will stop for lunch at the Subway or Coney Island in Clinton, Michigan. After lunch we will finish shooting and wrap up around 4 pm. From there, everyone makes their own way home.
Make sure you fill up your tank. We don't have a large area to cover, but accommodations are few. Carpooling is recommended if possible. Richard Grubola's cellphone is: (248-321-8121).
Important Note: The next day if needed will be the rain date.
